BOARD OF GOVERNORS OP THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (Released for Publication Friday morning, May 23; not earlier) lUh.l May 22, I9I1.7 CONDITION OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANKS During the week ended May 21 member bank reserve balances decreased $7,000,000. Reductions in member bank reserves arose from a decrease of $162,000,000 in Reserve Bank credit, offset in part by an increase of $10,000,000 in gold stock and decreases of $18,000,000 in money in circulation,$17,000,000 in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks and $111,000,000 in nonmember deposits and other Federal Reserve accounts. Excess reserves of member banks on May 21 were estimated to be approximately $770,000,000* Holdings of loans, discounts and advances decreased $22,000,000 and of United States Government aecurities $86,000,000, The decrease in holdings of United States Government securities reflects decreases of $182,000,000 in bills and $1**000,000 in bonds and an increase of $100,000,000 in certificates* Changes in member bank reserve balances and related items during the week and the year ended May 21, lokl were • as follows* 9 Increase or'decrease since May 21, May lu, lay 22, 19U7 19U7 19W (In millions of dollars) U S.
