H.4.1 Factors Affecting Reserve Balances of Depository Institutions

BOARD OF GOVERNORS OP THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM H.4.1 (For Immediate Release) December 22, 19^9 CONDITION OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANKS During the week ended December 21 member bank reserve balances decreased "$96 million. Reductions in member bank reserves resulted from increases of J$63^ million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks, $132 million in ^money in circulation and $60 million in nonmember deposits and other Federal Reserve accounts, and a decrease of $^9 million in gold stock, offset in part by an increase of $777 million in Reserve Bank credit and a decrease of $5 million in Treasury cash. Excess reserves of member banks on December 21 were estimated to be approximately $850 million. Holdings of loans, discounts and advances increased $21 million and of United States Government securities $369 million. The increase in holdings of United States Government securities reflects increases of $21^ million in bills, i$l66 million in certificates, $264 million in notes, and a decrease of $275 million in bonds• Changes in member bank reserve balances and related items during the week and the year ended December 21, 19^9 were as follows: Increase• or decrease sine: e Dec. 21, Dec.
