H.4.1 Factors Affecting Reserve Balances of Depository Institutions

BOARD OF GOVERNORS For Immediate Release H.4.1 OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM January 5, 1956 WEEKLY AVERAGES OF MEMBER BANK RESERVES, RESERVE BANK CREDIT, AND RELATED ITEMS and STATEMENT OF CONDITION OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANKS The weekly average of member bank reserve balances for the week ending January 4 decreased $23 million to $19,464 million. Estimated required reserves increased $88 million; and estimated excess reserves decreased $111 million to $601 million. Excess reserves exceeded member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks by $18 million; the week before they were $4l million less than member bank borrowings. The principal changes reducing reserves were decreases of $336 million in Federal Reserve float and $170 million in member bank borrowings, and an increase of $103 million in "other" deposits with Federal Reserve Banks. The principal offsetting changes were decreases of $263 million in money in circulation, $167 million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks, $73 million in "other" Federal Reserve accounts (net), and $59 million in foreign deposits with Federal Reserve Banks, and an increase of $18 million in Federal Reserve holdings of U. S. Government securities. Total Reserve Bank credit decreased $484 million. As of Wednesday, January 4, holdings of U. S. Government securities held under repurchase agreement were $144 million lower than a week earlier and member bank borrowings were $112 million lower.
