H.4.1 Factors Affecting Reserve Balances of Depository Institutions

BOARD OF GOVERNORS For Immediate Release H.4.I OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM March 7, 1957 WEEKLY AVERAGES OF MEMBER BANK RESERVES, RESERVE BANK CREDIT, AND RELATED ITEMS and STATEMENT OF CONDITION OF THE FEDERA LRESERVE BANKS The average of daily, figures of member ban kreserves for the week ending March 6 increased $38 million to $18,721 million, Estimated required reserves increased $35 million; and estimated excess reserves increased $3 million to $428 million. Member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks exceeded excess reserves by $302 million, compared with $263 million the week before. The principal changes supplying average reserves were increases of $59 million in Federal Reserve holdings of U. S. Government securities, and $42 million in member ban kborrowings, and a decrease of $170 million in "other" deposits with Federal Reserve Banks. The principal offsetting changes were increases of $182 million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks and $22 million in money in circulation, and a decrease of $38 million in Federal Reserve float. Total Reserve Bank credit increased $58 million. As of Wednesday, March 6, holdings of U. S. Government securities bought outright were $48 million higher than a week earlier and member bank borrowings were $346 million higher.
