BOARD OF GOVERNORS For Immediate Release H.4.1 OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM May 31, 1957 WEEKLY AVERAGES OF MEMBER BANK RESERVES, RESERVE BANK CREDIT, AND RELATED ITEMS and STATEMENT OF CONDITION OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANKS The average of daily figures of member bank reserves for the week ending May 29 decreased #202 million to $18,616 million. Estimated required reserves decreased $21 million; and estimated excess reserves decreased $181 million to $311 million. Member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks exceeded excess reserves by $572 million, compared with $280 million the week before. The principal changes reducing average reserves were a decrease of $362 million in Federal Reserve float, and increases of $37 million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks and $15 million in money in circulation. The principal offsetting changes were increases of $111 million in member bank borrowings, $86 million in gold stock, and $15 million in Federal Reserve holdings of U. S. Government securities. Total Reserve Bank credit decreased $237 million. As of Wednesday, May 29, holdings of U. S. Government securities bought outright were $55 million higher than a week earlier, U. S. Government securities held under repurchase agreement were $63 million higher, and member bank borrowings were $29U million higher.
