BOARD OP GOVERNORS For Immediate Release H.4.1 OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM December 31, 1959 WEEKLY AVERAGES OF MEMBER BANK RESERVES, RESERVE BANK CREDIT, AND RELATED ITEMS and STATEMENT OF CONDITION OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANKS The average of daily figures of total member bank reserves held during the week ended December 30 decreased $277 million to $18,994 million, all of which was in member bank reserve balances at the Federal Reserve Banks. Estimated required reserves decreased $98 million; and estimated excess reserves decreased $179 million to $506 million. Member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks exceeded excess reserves by $422 million, compared with $295 million the week before. The principal changes reducing average reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks were decreases of $183 million in U. S. Government securities bought outright, $52 million in member bank borrowings, and $30 million in Federal Reserve float, and an increase of $22 million in foreign deposits with Federal Reserve banks. The principal offsetting change was a decrease of $31 million in currency in circulation. Total Reserve Bank credit decreased $254 million. As of Wednesday, December 30, holdings of U. S. Government securities bought outright were $124 million lower than a week earlier, U. S. Government securities held under repurchase agreement were $30 million higher, and member bank borrowings were $98 million lower.
