H.4.1 Factors Affecting Reserve Balances of Depository Institutions

BOARD OF GOVERNORS For Immediate Release H.U.I OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM February 18, i960 WEEKLY AVERAGES OF MEMBER BANK RESERVES, RESERVE BANK CREDIT, AND RELATED ITEMS and STATEMENT OF CONDITION OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANKS The average of daily figures of total member "bank reserves held during the week ended February 17 decreased $6l million to $1.8,219 million, which reflected in part a decrease of $75 million in member bank reserve balances at the Federal Reserve Banks. Estimated required reserves decreased $78 million; and estimated excess reserves increased $17 million to $440 million, Member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks exceeded excess reserves by $533 million, compared with $427 million the week before. The principal changes reducing average reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks were increases of $178 million in "other" deposits with Federal Reserve Banks, $174 million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks, $62 million in "other" F. R. accounts (net),and $32 million in currency in circulation, and a decrease of $34 million in Federal Reserve holdings of U. S. Government securities. The principal offsetting changes were increases of $314 million in Federal Reserve float and $123 million in member bank borrowings. Total Reserve Bank credit increased $1*00 million. As of Wednesday, February 17, holdings of U. S. Government securities bought outright were $4l million lower than a week earlier, U. S. Government securities held under repurchase agreement were $j2 million higher, and member bank borrowings were $119 million higher. Holdings of certificates decreased $2,000 million and notes increased a like amount, reflecting the exchange of certificates maturing February 15 for 4 7/8 per cent notes maturing in 1964. S. Government securities held in custody by the Federal Reserve Banks for foreign account were $4,537 million, an increase of $69 million for the week and an increase of $737 million from the comparable date a year ago.
