Banks For lmmealBte release H.4.1 September 21, 1961 The average of daily figures of total member bank reserves held during the week ended September 20 increased $253 million to $19,450 million, which included an increase of $206 million in member bank reserve balances at the Federal Reserve Banks. Estimated required reserves increased $262 million; and estimated excess reserves decreased $9 million to $579 million* Excess reserves exceeded member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks by $535 million, compared with the revised figure of $561 million the week before. The principal changes supplying average reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks were increases of $17 million in member bank borrowings and $657 million in Federal Reserve float, and decreases of $6l million in currency in circulation and $40 million in "other" F. R. accounts (net). The principal offsetting changes were a decrease of $473 million in Federal Reserve holdings of U. S. Government securities and an increase of $97 million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks. Total Reserve Bank credit increased $199 million. As of Wednesday, September 20, holdings of U. S• Government securities bought outright were $398 million lower than a week earlier, U. S. Government securities held under repurchase agreement were $70 million higher, and member bank borrowings were $175 million higher. Outright holdings of bills, certificates, notes, and bonds decreased $78 million, $62 million, $183 million, and $75 million, respectively. Government securities held in custody by the Federal Reserve Banks for foreign account were $5,916 million, a decrease of $37 million for the week and an increase of $513 million from the comparable date a year ago.
