H.4.1 Factors Affecting Reserve Balances of Depository Institutions

F E D E R A L R E S E R V E Factors Affecting Bank Reserves and Condition Statement of F.R. Banks For immediate release H.4.1 June 6, 1963 The average of daily figures of total member bank reserves held during the week ended June 5 decreased a net of $118 million to $19,483 million. Estimated currency and coin of member banks decreased $135 million and their reserve balances at the Federal Reserve Banks increased $17 million. Estimated required reserves decreased $18 million; and estimated excess reserves decreased $1C0 million to $378 million. Excess reserves exceeded member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks by $162 million, compared with the revised figure of $212 million the week before. The principal changes supplying average reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks were increases of $28l million in U. 3. Government securities bought outright and $102 million held under repurchase agreement, and a decrease of $30 million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks. The principal offsetting changes were decreases of $128 million in Federal Reserve float, $50 million in member bank borrowings, and $21 million in gold stock, and an increase of $188 million in currency in circulation. Total Reserve Bank credit increased $201 million. As of Wednesday, June 5, holdings of U. S. Government securities bought outright were $442 million higher than a week earlier, U. S. Government securities held under repurchase agreement were $30 million higher, ,and member bank borrowings were $22 million higher. Outright holdings of bills, certificates, notes, and bonds increased $405 million, $5 million, $19 million, and $13 million, respectively..
