F E D E R A L R E S E R V E Factors Affecting Bank Reserves and Condition Statement of F.R. Banks For immediate release 1963 H.4.1 August 22, The average of daily figures of total member bank reserves held during the week ended August 21 decreased a net of $57 m illion to $19,647 m illion. E s ti­ $38 mated currency and coin of member banks increased m illion and their reserve balances at the Federal Reserve Banks decreased $95 m illion. Estimated required $32 $89 reserves increased m illion; and estimated excess reserves decreased m il­ $389 lion to m illio n. Excess reserves exceeded member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks by $95 m illion, compared with the revised figure of $126 m il­ lion the week before. The principal changes reducing average reserve balances with Federal $289 Reserve Banks were decreases of m illion in U. S. Government securities bought $58 $35 outright, m illion in member bank borrowings, and m illion in gold stock, and an increase of $180 m illion in "other" F. R. accounts (n e t). The principal offsetting changes were an increase of $420 m illion in Federal Reserve float and a decrease of $29 m illion in currency in circulation. Total Reserve Bank credit $92 increased m illio n. As of Wednesday, August 21, holdings of U. S. Government securities bought outright were $126 m illion lower than a week earlier, U. S. Government $95 securities held under repurchase agreement were m illion higher, and member bank borrowings were $46l m illion higher. Outright holdings of b ills , certificates, $217 3*732 $275 and bonds decreased m illion, $ million*and m illion, respectively, and notes increased $4,098 m illion. Changes in holdings of certificates, notes* 3*732 and bonds largely reflected the exchange of $ m illion of certificates and $343 m illion of bonds which matured August 15 for $4,075 m illion of 3“3/4 per cent 15 notes maturing November , 1964.
