H.4.1 Factors Affecting Reserve Balances of Depository Institutions

F E D E R AL R E S E R VE Factors Affecting Bank Reserves and Condition Statement of F.R. Banks For immediate releas April 2, 1964 The average of daily figures of total member bask reserves held during the week ended April 1 decreased a net of $269 million to $20,251 million. Estimated currency and coin of member banks increased $18 million and their reserve balances at the Federal Reserve Banks decreased $287 million- Estimated required reserves increased $21 million; and estimated excess reserves decreased $290 million to $230 million. Excess reserves exceeded member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks by $75 million, compared with the revised figure of $24l million the week before. The principal changes reducing average reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks were decreases of $46l million in Federal Reserve float, $124 mil lion in member bank borrowings, and $42 million in U. S. Government securities held under repurchase agreement, and an increase of $75 million in currency in circulation. The principal offsetting changes were an increase of $233 million in U. S. Government securities bought outright, and decreases of $163 million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks and $37 million in Treasury cash holdings. Total Reserve Bank credit decreased $397 million. As of Wednesday, April 1, holdings of U. S. Government securities bought outright were $561 million higher than a week earlier, U. S. Government securities held under repurchase agreement were $98 million higher, and member bank borrowings were $232 million higher.
