H.4.1 Factors Affecting Reserve Balances of Depository Institutions
F E D E R AL R E S E R VE Factors Affecting Bank Reserves and Condition Statement of F.R. Banks For immediate release April 23, 1964 The average of daily figures of total member bank reserves held during the week ended April 22 decreased a net of $9 million to $20,358 million. Estimated currency and coin of member banks increased $51 million and their reserve balances at the Federal Reserve Banks decreased $60 million. Estimated required reserves decreased $152 million; and estimated excess reserves increased $l43 million to $44l million. Excess reserves exceeded member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks by $122 million, compared with the revised figure of $108 million the week before. The principal changes reducing average reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks were decreases of $793 million in U. S. Government securities bought outright and $4l million in acceptances held under repurchase agreement. The principal offsetting changes were increases of $4l0 million in Federal Reserve float and $129 million in member bank borrowings, and decreases of $86 million in currency in circulation, $82 million in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks, and $^9 million in "other" F. R. accounts (net). Total Reserve Bank credit decreased $298 million. As of Wednesday, April 22, holdings of U. S. Government securities bought outright were $600 million lower than a week earlier, and member bank bor rowings were $634 million lower.
