Banks H.4.1 For immediate release August 1, 1968 The average of daily figures of total member bank reserves held during the week ended July 31, decreased a net of $127 million to $26,128 million. Estimated currency and coin of member banks increased $30 million and their reserve balances at the Federal Reserve Banks decreased $157 million. Estimated required reserves decreased $47 million; and estimated excess reserves decreased $80 million to $314 million. Member bank borrowings at the Federal Reserve Banks exceeded excess reserves by $288 million, compared with the revised figure of $245 million the week before. The principal changes reducing average reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks was a decrease of $406 million in Federal Reserve float, and an increase of $102 million in "Other" F. R. accounts (net). The principal offsetting changes were an increase of $180 million in U. S. Government securities bought outright, and a decrease of $152 million in currency in circulation. Total Reserve Bank credit decreased $179 million. As of Wednesday, July 31, 1968, holdings of U. S, Government securities bought outright were $256 million higher than a week earlier, U. S. Government securities held under repurchase agreements were $237 million higher, and member bank borrowings were $28 million lower.
