H.4.1 Factors Affecting Reserve Balances of Depository Institutions
sStfgS:-. F E D E R AL R E S E R VE statistical release H.4.1 For immediate release December 18, 1969 The average of daily figures of total reserves of member banks increased $182 million in the latest statement week to $27,929 million. Member bank borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks declined while required reserves rose sharply. Much of the rise in required reserves was due to seasonal factors and in part, banks met this seasonal increase by reducing excess reserves to only nominal levels. A rise in float, about seasonal in proportion, and a decline in Treasury deposits with Federal Reserve Banks were the major factors providing reserves in the latest week. Partially offsetting these reserve supplies was a seasonal increase in currency in circulation which drained about $250 million of reserves. In addition, System Open Market operations drained about $200 million of reserves (net), on a weekly average basis, primarily through the outright sale of U.S. Government securities. Member bank borrowings exceeded excess reserves by $1,040 million, compared to the revised figure of $944 million for the previous week.
